Prof. K. Byrappa as head of Mangalore University has given us all the necessary support and backing in realizing this dream of ours.  On his taking charge as Vice Chancellor he was magnanimous in granting permission to study Konkani as a language at University level.  His extreme urgency in setting up the B. O. S. and finalizing the syllabus saved a precious academic year for the Konkani students.  Under his leadership Konkani Adhyayana Peeta will fulfill the expectations and aspirations of Konkani people as a whole.

The Konkani Speaking Community is very complex – with 41 communities, 3 major religions, umpteen number of Dialects, 5 scripts and spread all over the country particularly on the Western Coast of India spread over Gujarath, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka and Kerala.  But what holds all together is the language Konkani, and the interrelationship can be established through some of the customs, traditions and folklore that is common with all these varied communities.

Gumat is the common instrument of our cultural activities.  With very much rich heritage the unfortunate and sad story is we don’t have any documentation about our generation.  Lot of study and research has to be done regarding the history.  Origin and reasons for periodic migration of our people.   A Aryan language has now comfortably settled among the Dravidian languages.  Traits of migration are seen in the title G.S.B., Goud Saraswath Brahman.   Goud is a place in West Bengal, Saraswathi river in Rajasthan, Brahman – Vedic Gurus, or the influence of Konkani language on Bengali, Haryanvi, Bhojpuri, Rajasthani, Gujarathi and Marathi clearly shows a migration trail.

The Karnataka Government has been gracious enough to grant us a study chair with ` 2 crore endowment. I opine every bit of it should be spent on the study, research and documentation of this ancient language, its great literature, rich heritage and culture.  Konkani Adhyayana Peeta and Konkani Academy should work as two limbs of one body.

The Konkani Sahitya Academy can cater to the heart’s desire to promote culture in the form of folklore, theatre, music and dance.  Bring together all communities on one platform and establish a strong bond between different variants of Konkani people irrespective of creed, caste, dialect scripts and regions.

Whereas the Konkani Adhyayana Peeta can promote literary, educational, research and development works and be a brain to bring about a concrete identity to the Konkani speaking people.  The brain and heart should be in tendem with each other.
